Superego: Blaze of Awesome
Rowdy, raunchy humor abounds in Superego's latest burst
of comedic energy. In Blaze of Awesome, the troupe's usually
tight, toned and restrained style lets loose, lending a
formerly elusive voluptuousness to its dozen-plus short
sketches. While still managing to avoid fatty indulgences
like masturbatory inside jokes and slothful, meandering
scenes, Superego now flirts with temptations it once spurned:
sex, toilet humor, and a dinosaur that leaps out of nowhere
to devour a rambling actor and end the scene-the classic
dino ex machina device. The addition of actress Jaime Lee
to the show's growing roster of actor/playwrights (Mark
Bridges and Nathan Miller are new as well) reinvigorates
the entire cast's lust for acting. Her unscripted, engrossing
physicality fleshes out the ensemble's solid structure
of sharp dialogue and pointed plot. Though the group's
newest material is of a flammable nature, they handle it
like experienced pyrotechnicians, pulling off a kick-ass
fireworks display without having to evacuate the building.
